Ritan Park (Sun Park) Overview

A comprehensive guide to Ritan Park, a historical park where emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties held rituals to worship the Sun God.

Ritan Park, also known as the Temple of the Sun, is a historical park where emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties held rituals to worship the Sun God. It is one of the five imperial altar temples in Beijing.

The park was built in 1530 during the Ming Dynasty and expanded during the Qing Dynasty. It covers an area of 20.6 hectares and features a large circular altar, known as the Altar of the Sun, which is the main site for the worship rituals. The park is also known for its beautiful scenery, with trees, lakes, and traditional pavilions.

The most famous landmark in the park is the Altar of the Sun, a circular platform made of red glazed tiles. The altar is surrounded by a square wall, symbolizing the ancient Chinese belief that the earth is square and the sky is round. The park also includes several other buildings, such as the Hall of Worship, the Temple of the Sun God, and the Imperial Vault of Heaven.
